I get asked how to do eyebrows more than anything else! It is one of those tricky areas of makeup. The eyes are the windows of the soul, and the brows are the frames. How your eyebrows look can change the whole look of your face, even your personality!

You don’t want to go too heavy and you need to create the perfect shape. There are many factors that can go wrong. I am taking you step-by-step through the process of how to do eyebrows in 5 steps in this blog post.

Step 1 – Choose your tools for perfect brows

When it comes to how to do eyebrows, there are many products designed for filling them in and shaping them. If you want a more natural look, go for a pencil such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. I love the fine point, it draws on fine hair like strokes. Using a brow powder or a matte eyeshadow will give you a softer look. Brow pomades like Illamasqua Precison Brow Gel create a more structured bold brow. A brow mascara like Glossier Boy Brow will make your brows look thicker and structured but in a more natural way.

Top tips when choosing a brow product:

  • Choose a shade equal to or 1 shade darker than your natural hair colour.
  • Go for cool undertones and avoid red tones in the product
  • If your brows are long and unruly, a pomade or brow mascara/gel will keep them in place
  • Clear brow gel is great for setting your brows and can go on top of pencils and powders

Step 2 – Brush your eyebrows up

Using a clean mascara spoolie, brush the hairs of your eyebrows upwards. This gives you a good idea of where the sparse areas you will need to fill in are. If you want a super groomed look, or if you want to tame unruly brows or make thin brows look thicker, use a product such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze or Soapbrows to style brows into your desired shape before filling them in.

Step 3 – Create the perfect brow shape

Knowing how to shape your brows is what I believe throws some people off how to do eyebrows in general. You are going to mark out your brow shape using a brow pencil or a small angled brush with a little powder or pomade on it. Firstly, hold the pencil or brush along the side of your nose, straight up the inner corner of your eye, and lightly mark the beginning of your brow. Next, keeping the pencil/brush against the side of your nostril, angle through the center of your iris and mark the highest point of your arch on the top of your brow. Then you will angle the pencil/brush to the outer corner of your eye and mark where the brow will finish. Be sure to only lightly mark these points. Finally, join up the marks by lightly sketching out the shape of the brow.

Step 4 – Fill the eyebrows in

Whichever product you choose, you want to fill in the brow shape by following the natural hair growth pattern of your eyebrows. If you are using a pencil, draw on with fine hair like strokes, and then brush through with a clean mascara spoolie to soften and make it look more natural. For powders and pomades, a small angled brush with stiff bristles works best to apply the products following the hair growth. Brow mascaras or gels are just brushed through. If you’d like to create more thickness, bush the brow mascara or gel in the opposite direction of the brow growth first, and then brush with the hair growth into your desired shape.

Pro advice – Don’t apply product too heavily at the start of the brow, keep it lighter there as this will look more natural and less like a “stenciled on brow”

Step 5 – Polishing the look of the brows

An optional fishing touch, but one that can give you an instant eye lift, so it’s well-worth considering. Using a flat concealer brush, apply a thin layer of concealer along the bottom edge of your brows. Blend this out with your brush so that it does not look like an obvious line. I also like to apply a little concealer at the top of my brow, from the highest point of the arch to the tail. Again, being sure you blend the product well. This will instantly lift your eyes and make them look more youthful.

Once you have followed these steps a few times, how to do eyebrows will become second nature. However, if you don’t want to do this process every single day, I would recommend having your brows done professionally every few weeks to keep them looking groomed and in perfect shape all of the time.

I am a brow specialist, and I offer brow waxing and tinting and brow lamination at Kathryn Kavanagh Salon. Brow lamination is a treatment that gives your brows a lifted, fuller look and keeps them in perfect shape for weeks. The treatment includes a brow wax and tint and the results last 6-8 weeks.
